What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback gives people information about the state of their body. If you have ever stepped on a scale you have used a simple form of biofeedback. Biofeedback also provides a way for people to measure changes they choose to make in their body’s functioning to improve health and well being. In a session, equipment measures internal body activity (heart rate, muscle tension, skin temperature and moisture). These measurements are translated into sounds and images shown on a computer screen. The client then practices a variety of techniques, such as deep breathing or relaxation, while watching their impact on the screen. After a number of sessions a person can produce positive changes in their body without using the biofeedback equipment.
